Track Day Headlight Covers

for Track Days or Racing Events

I had obtained a full set of track and racing plastic from various individuals and each time I would go to the track I got tired of taping up the HUGE holes left in the upper fairing after removing the headlights.  So  I tried to obtain covers off of the Basic Racer.  This is where we got the idea for these from.  Well the Basic Racer covers seem not to have a HRC part number, and thus were not obtainable.  So after looking at the picture, we decided to make them.  Credit goes to my friend, RCF4, aka Jim, for being the chief engineer behind all of this.  He has some good experience working with fiberglass and so I pretty much got outta his way and let him do his thing.  He found some real strong glass, that had a front weave and a back matting.  Then we just cut the glass to approximately the right size.  We laid down 2 sheets of syran wrap across my street uppers with the headlights in them to give it the proper shape.  Then we laid down the glass and put about 2-3 coats of resin on it, covered it up with wrap again and let the catalyst do its work.

Then Jim applied some real nice light weight bondo to smooth it out for painting.  Then the only part I did was to do the final sanding and painting.  However, I bought Gloss Silver and Semi-Gloss Black.  But by looking at he picture, you'd think it was Semi-Gloss Silver and Gloss Black.  Nonetheless it turned out pretty dang good.  We then used 4 very small screws to fasten it to the fairing.  The final look is really quite nice.

Luckily I have both a street and a track set of uppers, so I was very comfortable with screwing these right to the fairing.  If you wanted to make something like this yourself, I think some of the 3M automotive trim tape would keep these on real good too.  Then you could take it off when you went back to the street.
